The most scenic town in the Shan State, Kengtung lies about midway between the Thanlwin River and Mekong River valleys. It is situated 456 kilometers northeast of Taunggyi and 163 kilometers north of the border town of Tachileik opposite Mae Sai, (Thailand). It is 56 miles away from Mong Lar, a Chinese border town. Kengtung means “Walled City of Tong” and Tong is a reference to the kingdom’s mythical founder, a hermit named Tungkalasi. Historic center for the state’s Khun culture, the town is surrounded by Wa, Shan, Akha and Lahu villages. Kengtung is also known for colorful tribes. Kengtung market is always busy with colorful hill tribes. It serves as one of the most suitable places for eco-tourism activities like trekking, mountain-biking and adventure tours. Built around a small lake called Naung Tung, the city is surrounded by three hills, providing beautiful scenery.
Breakfast at Hotel, start an orientation tour of downtown Yangon. You will drive through Yangon’s busy roads and take a glimpse of the hustle downtown, Mahabandoola Park, Town Hall. See the magnificent colonial buildings of Victorian & Edwardian era architecture. This introductory drive will end with a stop near SULE PAGODA – dating back over 2,000 years ago, for brief photo taking. Next, visit BOTATAUNG PAGODA, named after the 1000 military leaders who escorted relics of the Buddha from India over 2000 years ago. Afterwards, you may proceed for lunch.
Next, photo stop at Royal Lake with the background of the famous Shwedagon Pagoda. Finally visit sunset at Shwedagon Pagoda, the finest of Yangon and perhaps the most stunning religious edifice in the world. Take your time to enjoy seeing this impressive feature and watching local people. Stroll on its platform surrounded by set of smaller temples, shrines and pavilions, and observe numerous shops along the stairways selling various colorful items, flowers and books. As the sun sets, the reddish golden rays of Shwedagon reflect on everything around and turning into a magical arena. Great photo time & a moment to take away with you. Overnight in Yangon.
Transfer from Yangon (or) Heho or Mandalay airport for flight to Kengtung.
Arrive Kengtung airport and transfer to hotel. In the afternoon enjoy an orientation tour of Kengtung, it is a sleepy but historic center for the state’s Khun culture, surrounded by Wa, Shan, Akha and Lahu villages. It is a very pleasant town as it is built around a small Lake, NUNG TUNG LAKE and is dotted with ageing Buddhist temples and crumbling British colonial architecture. Tour highlights include visit to Shan Lacquer ware making home cottage, Wan Pon “Shan” Village and Shan houses, Wa people village and visit to Standing Buddha Image – it situates at the place where Kengtung was founded about one thousand years ago, continue to Thittapin Taung – the 245 years old dipterocarpus tree planted by King Alaungphaya, the founder of Third Myanmar Dynasty and stroll around the Naung Tong Lake. Overnight in Kengtung.
After breakfast at Hotel, visit to Kengtung Bazaar to observe the colorful trading of Chinese merchants and of the different minority tribes from this area. Afterwards, travel by vehicle outside Kentung, and trek for about one and half hours to Ho kyin “Akha people villages”, After exploring the village continues for another half hour to Na Phi Phank village, home to both Lahu and Akha peoples. You will obverse Weaving Works where traditional clothes are made before exporting to Thailand. Continue past two more Akha villages and continue by vehicle to the Khun village of Mong Zine to observe how local blacksmiths make traditional Lahu knives. Return to Kengtung by vehicle. Overnight in Kengtung.
After breakfast at Hotel, drive to Loimwe (app. 2 hours drive), a former British hill station, Loimwe sites among some of Burma’s prettiest countryside. The main attraction along the way is the scenery on the ascent to Loimwe, which passes through the cool highlands; countless generations have sculpted the contours of the land, enriching the lakes and forests with rice fields and terraces, creating a landscape of profound allure and serenity. It commands a magnificent view of the surrounding area and enjoys a temperate climate. Visit the old colonial governor’s house and an old church. On the way back from Loimwe you will have several stops to visit different villages. WAN LUN SHAN VILLAGE, HO LUP AKHA VILLAGE, where you can see the traditional Akha tribes with their colorful dresses; NANG CHO WA VILLAGE and PANG-Y Lahu village on the left and right side of the road. Overnight in Kengtung.
After breakfast at Hotel, morning free at leisure. In the early afternoon transfer to Airport for your departure flight. (B)
